I actually agree with you here. But I also agree with the others, it depends on the kind of story you're trying to tell. In my case, I am here, and my players know it too, to create a story, in which they are the main characters. There is some fudging for and against the NPC's. Not very often admittedly. In fact, I can really only think of 2 times it's happened at the moment, but they helped a lot. My players know none of it, and it's been my most successful campaign with a majority of my players. They love the dramatic scenarios. One character was nearly taken out by a sniper on a rooftop. You know what he did for the rest of the campaign? Keep an eye out for guys with guns, especially ones he can't see. He carried that lesson on snipers for the rest of the campaign. This is after an epic battle where they easily could've died from both the enemies they were fighting and the explosives another PC was throwing around. They had to carefully plan it, execute it, and narrowly survived. They were all proud to overcome the challenge. You think if the big guy they were facing never landed a punch on them it would've been anything to talk about?
Now, I'm using White Wolf which is all about the story so I can see where others would disagree. In DnD, it can be largely about the "game", and what's the point of a game if it's not fair? On the other hand, I see it more as, what's the point in a game where the greatest villain isn't a challenge after all the build-up, or a PC randomly dies to something completely out of his control outside of a combat situation? Sometimes luck needs some help.
I've had tons of players die in campaigns, but they haven't all been memorable, or even interesting. If you're playing for the grittiness or the challenge in a "game" sort of sense, then I could see it as ok. The other games where people randomly died were plenty fun in a different sort of way. We expected the deaths and didn't get as connected to our characters or other characters, but it was fun. (saying that, it was still common knowledge that our DM would cheat his characters to hit ours more often so some great challenges were had). If you're playing for the story, then I don't see it working as well if your "heroes" die to random high-rolling traps or stray bullets from the lowest minions. As long as they don't realize you're saving them and/or you do it rarely enough that the danger is still there, then the dramatic tension and fear for their life will exist as their hp gets smaller and smaller. It's all about balance, moderation, and the kind of game you're trying to tell.

I've never given it much thought, but I've never played (or seen a homosexual character played) at the table. I might try it with the next character I make, though I wonder if it will improve the story - or just end up being a gimmick. Hmm... I wonder.

I agree with the other comments, the picture is epic. It took me quite a while to find a decent zombie pic and i have to say that is by far the best :) And i definantly see what your saying about the defintion of 'zombie' loosing its meaning over the years. It was originally defined as the dead coming back to life, like crawling out of their graves. And now its mostly because of a worldwide infection or something.

Well, you have put it quite nicely. But I have to add, that not every Fantasy Setting is that strongly modelled after medieval europe. There are some Settings, where homosexuality is is widely exepted. I remember that there was a note about powers that worked on "persons of the favoured sex" in earthdawn that hinted, that such a favoured sex must not be the obvious choise and that there are other possibilities.
In my experience, a human sleeping with an elf (and maybe even beget a half-elven child that way) is much worse than homosexuality.

I have never played a gay character in a fantasy setting. They were all very young and still not too interested in anything sexual or their orientation simply didn't matter. But I often play Tieflings in D&D and the need to hide your devilish heritage is prety much the same as you described the need to hide your homosexuality (which would hardly be a problem in any campaign I was part in so far).

Hi all, – stumbled upon this blog due to pure luck when roaming around the web this evening, and pleased that I did! I do like the page structure and tones, but I ought to point out that I’m having issues when it loads. I’m using Shiira 1 browser for mac, and the side panel doesn’t align properly. i’m confident applied exactly the same layout on a client’s web site, but the menu seems Ok on mine. I have an idea the problem is at my end & I suppose it’s time to swap!
